Mo movies in South Carolina
Before IMAX, the drive-in was the original big screen. Once upon a time, you could watch a movie from your car. Pull up, hang the speaker from the pole onto your car window and get all Hollywood on a Friday night.
The concession stand was in the middle of the parking lot, and you could get your steps in – although steps were less of a concern – while grabbing some popcorn, a hot dog, some nachos and a Coke.
This was the drive-in theatre.
You can still do this very same thing in Monetta, SC at the Big Mo. Yes, even in 2024.
Lisa and Richard Boaz, the owners of the Big Mo, said there were a lot of differences between this throwback version of the big screen and the traditional movie-going experience.
“What makes it so special and different from today’s million-dollar theaters with air conditioning and recliner seats,” they replied. “Simple, you can enjoy the outdoors, watch a double feature, see the stars under the stars. Have dinner in the snack bar. Bring the kids and the pets. Meet your friends and neighbors for a fun evening.”
Try doing that at your local theatre.
They added they are also able to screen the top six movies in the nation along with a few oldies every now and then.
Lisa and Richard said the Big Mo started out as a single screen drive-in built in 1951.
“We re-opened in 1999, added screen 2 in 2005, and added screen 3 in 2011,” they said. “We upgraded to digital projection in 2014 and added the gigantic peach projection booth in 2015.”
Yes. A giant peach projection booth. Mo for your money.
