The first things we learn in life are local. They are the things we can reach or hear. Our mother’s voice telling us we are loved. A wrist caught (hopefully) before we can touch the hot stove. This is our first exposure to learning about, and being informed by, our local environs. It’s our first exposure to local news.
Later, our world expands, evolving perhaps from our family home to a neighborhood or other community. It’s a larger, but still local, world we are faced with and will learn from and about. Don’t walk on that guy’s grass or he will yell at you. There’s a shortcut through a hole in the fence that cuts five minutes off the walk to a friend’s house. Again, local news.
Later still we find we are affected by forces we might not have direct contact with or have even considered. A vote taken by a county commission. A bill passed leading to road construction. Local news.
At every stage of our life, we find ourselves in need of learning from and understanding our immediate surroundings. We find ourselves in need of local news.
Which brings us to Augusta Today.
Augusta Today is a digital doorway into the Augusta area, inspired by the idea that local stories, penned by local writers and made readily available to local readers are not only welcome, but important. Those dispatches are a source of education, entertainment and conversation. They allow us to make informed decisions for our families and our community. They bring us together to discuss and yes, sometimes debate. Local news, covered well and easily accessed, is foundational to ensuring this community, our community, the Greater Augusta community, is more than merely a place where people reside. It’s a place where people live.
With that in mind, our staff has been drawn from the ranks of those who know Augusta best. Their reporting, commentary and documentation of our dynamic community will provide a constantly evolving snapshot of the Greater Augusta area. They are voices that can be counted on to provide timely, accurate and insightful reporting and analysis of those stories that shape the Greater Augusta region. I’m proud to be part of that team and we are all excited to get started.
So welcome to Augusta Today. We hope you will make it a daily destination – free and easy – for your local news.
Let’s begin.
