Former Burke County resident appears in court over death of son
Lelani Simon, a former Burke County resident accused of killing her 20-month-old son in 2022 and leaving his remains in a dumpster, appeared in court on Friday.
Simon initially reported her son Quinton missing in early October 2022. His remains were found in a Chatham County landfill the following month and Simon was subsequently arrested.
The appearance allowed both Simon’s defense and the prosecution the opportunity to update on preparation for the trial. This included a request by the prosecution that text messages data from Simon’s phone be admitted as evidence. The prosecution said it illustrates what was going on in Simon’s life at the time, including relationship issues between Simon and her boyfriend.
Judge Tammy Stokes did not make a ruling on the evidence Friday. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for next month, leading up to an expected October 9 trial date.
