Georgia Power commitment to Augusta University addresses education in Richmond County
Georgia Power has committed $200,000 to Augusta University in an effort to improve the quality of the education and educators in Richmond County.
The investment will go toward the College of Education and Human Development’s Richmond Recruitment and Retention, or R3, Initiative.
The primary purpose of R3 will be to attract high school seniors – especially minority male students – to a career in education. Nearly 85% of students in Richmond County are members of minority groups. It will also be applied toward building intentional support systems designed to ensure students remain engaged and feel like part of a larger community.
Other planned R3 efforts include developing a system of support leaders for first- through third-year educators and engaging retired teachers in observation, mentoring and support for education degree candidates and young teachers.
A portion of the Georgia Power funding will also go toward funding partial scholarships to assist teachers in earning a Master of Arts in Teaching through an online program designed for more seasoned learners.
