We’re learning that Tiger Woods’s son Charlie and President Trump’s granddaughter Kai are scheduled to participate in next month’s Junior Invitational Golf Tournament at Sage Valley Country Club.
The Junior Invitational has, for more than a decade, brought the best young amateur golfers to the area. The tournament has grown in stature and become one of the most, if not the most, important tournament on the calendar for young players. To qualify to play in the tournament you must be a junior, not yet 18-years-old. The list of alumni is impressive. Winners include Scottie Sheffler, Joaquin Niemann, Akshay Bhatia, Carson Young, Anna Davis & Asterisk Tally. Some of the participants through the years include major champions Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Collin Morikawa.
I’m proud to say that I was associated with the event at the beginning, serving on the planning committee and as an emcee at many of the evening activities. I even got the chance to meet and introduce former President George W. Bush at one of the opening ceremonies.
When it comes to golf, this area is known for the Masters – and rightfully so. It is, arguably, the best tournament in the professional game. A case can easily be made that we are now also home to the best tournament for male and female juniors. When I sat in those early meetings back in 2010, that was their goal. It would appear that the next generation of Woods and Trumps will help them along that road.
