Pass-a-Grille Florida Retains Old Florida Feel

This narrow strip of land tucked between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico is one of Augusta Today writer Tee Gentry’s favorite Blue Highways destinations.

There's nothing fancy about the docks in Pass-a-Grille, Florida - and that is part of the charm.

One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited is a single block wide and 31 blocks long - historic Pass-a-Grille Beach, Florida.

Nothing fancy here, just raw beauty. The Gulf of Mexico on one side and Tampa Bay on the other.

I lived in St. Petersburg for three years and of all the beautiful beaches in the area, such as Clearwater and St. Pete Beach, Pass-a-Grille was my favorite.

A small community of a little more than 900 residents, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

During the high season, Pass-a-Grille vibrates with the energy of out-of-towners, like me, responding to the old Florida vibes. A favorite spot is Paradise Grille, a wonderful oceanfront diner with outdoor-only service right on the water. The salty smell of the ocean air as you have a cup of coffee and breakfast is intoxicating. I’m not sure you can feel more relaxed - without medication.

If you are in the mood for a cocktail or cold beer, try the Hurricane Seafood Restaurant’s rooftop tiki bar. It’s been serving Pass-a-Grille visitors and locals alike for more than 43 years.

With nothing between Passe-a-Grille and the ocean, deep sea fishing charters are a real attraction. I would recommend booking some time on the Miss Pass a Grille, which departs from Merry Pier.

The centerpiece of Pass-a-Grille is the historic Don CeSar hotel, which opened in 1928. The Don is a massive pink hotel and stands sentry over the white sandy beach, boats leaving the marina, the small bait shop, and the seagulls flying low looking for their next meal, just as it has for almost 100 years.

A couple fun facts about the Don CeSar: The United States Army took over the hotel to use it as a military hospital during World War II. Also, this Mediterranean Revival building was built on a floating concrete pad to prevent it from sinking in the sand. So far, so good.

Pass-a-Grille makes me feel like I’m safe. It was familiar to me the first time I visited. It’s one of those destinations that makes me feel better just because I know I am on my way to see it again. Sitting at Paradise Grille drinking coffee, Pass-a-Grille dares me to be stressed. I can’t. It’s like the grill - Paradise.
