Five Augusta-area schools are recipients of the 2024-2025 Military Flagship School Award, presented by the Georgia Department of Education, which recognizes schools that have provided outstanding support to military-connected students and families. Those honored include Cedar Ridge Elementary, Greenbriar Middle, Grovetown Elementary, and Riverside Middle schools of the Columbia County School District and Freedom Park School of the Richmond County School System. These schools have been recognized for their commitment to fostering inclusive, stable, and supportive environments that meet the needs of students from military families.
The Military Flagship School Award highlights schools that exceed expectations by providing resources, events, and an inviting environment for students who may have to relocate often and experience other issues unique to military life. This award is one arm of a larger initiative by the Georgia Department of Education to deepen connections between public schools and the military community.
The honor meant a lot, Superintendent Richard Woods said in a Georgia Department of Education release. “As the son of a military family, I understand firsthand the challenges and transitions military families face. That's why it's so important to me to recognize schools that go above and beyond to support Georgia's military-connected students. These 25 schools have created welcoming, stable environments where military families feel valued and supported. One of the most meaningful ways we can honor those who serve is by serving their children well.”
Through thoughtful programs and consistent outreach, the Augusta-recognized schools continue to set a standard for military-friendly education in Georgia.
