The state will give $2.5 million in rural housing awards to Augusta and Swainsboro to help support new development and infrastructure improvements. The funds come from OneGeorgia Authority, a program meant to help build homes where workers need them most.

In Augusta, 55 houses will be built during Southern Oaks Phase I on 11.5 acres of land. The next steps will add 104 more homes and shops. Augusta Utilities pitched in $110,000 to support the work.

"Georgia is experiencing rapid growth in communities across the state, and with that growth comes a need to provide infrastructure for those filling the record-breaking number of jobs to live and work," said Governor Brian Kemp in a press release to WRDW.

According to WRDW, Swainsboro's Rolling Oaks Subdivision will spread across 23 acres. The first phase will include 24 houses, with future plans for a total of 47 homes.

Christopher Nunn, who runs the Department of Community Affairs, spoke about why homes matter. "Housing Georgia's talented workforce is crucial for the state's continued economic growth and prosperity," said Nunn.
