State officials approved $99.8 million for a cutting-edge research center at Augusta University. The new 150,000-square-foot structure will house advanced labs and modern tech systems.
"The incredible support of the governor, the lieutenant governor, the Speaker of the House, House and Senate leadership, and members of the Georgia General Assembly provides Augusta University with the tools and resources to be a world-class institution," said Augusta University President Russell T. Keen to Jagwire.
The University System of Georgia will get $169.5 million in basic funding, reflecting a 2.7% student increase. Medical training gets a boost with $7.4 million, while $150,000 goes to special pregnancy care training at the Medical College.
During the fast-paced 40-day session, officials tracked over 635 bills. The stack included 221 health bills and 96 college-related plans. Just 142 bills passed and now sit on Gov. Brian Kemp's desk.
"We prepare all year to put Augusta University in the best position. This year was incredible. AU received the largest cash-funded capital project in the amended state budget. Those are sessions you dream about and hope for. I am so proud of all who pulled together to support the need for a new research building," said Margie Miller, who leads Government Relations.
House Bill 322 was also passed, and allows dental experts from across the globe to teach in Georgia schools. House Bill 38 brought good news for students struggling to finish school by covering outstanding balances for costs like tuition and fees.
