This June, baseball fans will see the Augusta GreenJackets transform into the CSRA River Donkeys. The two-day switch pays tribute to the watchful animals guarding an ancient site near Augusta.

The Single-A Braves affiliate picked this striking name to shine light on the donkeys that protect Stallings Island. This spot on the Savannah River holds priceless pottery from 5,000 years ago, making it a National Historic Landmark.

"These animals not only play a crucial role in preserving the site's ecology but also serve as living symbols of the island's ongoing conservation efforts," the GreenJackets said on their website.

Back in 1997, the Archaeological Conservancy bought the island to stop thieves and fix plant problems hiding old artifacts. They brought goats in 2008 to eat the wild plants. Later, donkeys were added to protect the goats from wild coyotes.

On the team's new badge, a donkey sits in a kayak — a fun twist that matches how locals paddle near the island to spot these special guards. This clever mix shows both old and new parts of the island's story.

Fans can watch the River Donkeys play on June 6 and 7.
