"I just want to change our culture towards sun protection in the southeast, and I feel like this is a start to it if we can remind people to do the things they love every day," said Mitchell Hanson, a Medical College of Georgia student, to WRDW.
Working with the Augusta Canal Authority, the Georgia Cancer Center and the Medical College of Georgia picked spots where outdoor activities happen most. These new stations aim to cut down melanoma cases in Richmond County, which keep rising year after year.
This effort is a partnership between the Georgia Cancer Center’s Sun Safe Team, IMPACT Melanoma, Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, and Unite in the Fight Against Cancer
The funds came from Unite in the Fight Against Cancer, while IMPACT Melanoma brought the program concept to life.
Check the Georgia Cancer Center's social media for updates about new locations. Anyone can use the free sunscreen at these stations.
