Columbia County officials have chosen to withdraw from the Clarks Hill Library Region. The change takes effect Jan. 1, 2026, though they'll stay connected to the state system.

"The Board of Commissioners understands the importance of providing quality library services and resources to our citizens and believes that staying with the state system as a Single County Region will allow the County to continue to do so effectively," the commissioners said in a statement to WRDW.

This shift creates an independent district within Georgia's network. Patrons will keep their access to materials across the state's libraries. The state gave its approval for the switch.

By running their own system, local staff can make quick decisions. They'll control budgets, programs, and book choices while keeping state funding intact. Short-term plans focus on meeting community needs.

The new setup aims to match services with what residents want. Staff will pick books and plan events based on local interests rather than regional priorities.

Users can still check out books from any Georgia library, just like before.
