Ironhead Barbecue Finding a Home in North Augusta
Locally famous for both its food and distinctive blue food truck, Ironhead Barbecue will soon be moving into permanent digs in North Augusta.

The former Pot Smoker building in North Augusta is in the process of being remodeled and reopened as Ironhead Barbecue.
Barbecue is slated to return to one of its more popular North Augusta haunts - 340 Edgefield Road. Once home to the Pot Smoker BBQ, the location will, in 90 days or so, open as headquarters to Ironhead Barbeque. Fans may have bellied up to their big bright blue food truck at festivals and fairs across the CSRA, but now they are stepping things up a notch.
Kurt Mueller recently took over the location of the soon-to-open sit down version of Ironhead and is excited about the food he is bringing to North Augusta.
Diners can expect to see ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and tacos - along with mouthwatering sides such as hash and rice, mac & cheese, coleslaw, potato salad and baked beans. Ironhead will also be offering Wagyu brisket and something you don’t find a lot of in the Augusta area - tri-tip. Tri-tip is a triangular cut of beef from the bottom sirloin. Ironhead’s version will be the house specialty and will be smoked, like brisket, instead of grilled.
Mueller said he is bringing the flavors of his hometown – St. Louis - to North Augusta.
“We don’t put a lot of emphasis on sauce,” he said. “We feel like great barbeque doesn’t need sauce.”
He said that if people want sauce, they will have it, but that the emphasis is on the seasoning and the quality of meat. Once the restaurant is open, they will feature traditional red and mustard sauces.
Mueller said food will be the star of the Ironhead show, but he plans to ensure it is a place people want to gather as well.
“The vision for this place is make the place much more inviting than it already is and incorporate live music,” he said. “(There will also be) many TVs for once football season starts to give fans a place to come with friends and eat great barbecue on Saturday or Sundays”
He has also given thought to an outdoor area with seating and cornhole boards. Currently, the goal is to have the new Ironhead, after a complete remodel, open by late August or Labor Day weekend. In the meantime, fans are encouraged to keep an eye on the official Facebook page for hours the blue food truck is setting up in the parking lot.
Mueller said he has been blown away by the response from the community.
“Just in the short time that we announced that we are opening the new location and serving out of the food truck here, we are selling out faster and faster each day,” he said.
