The Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department will host a free water safety class on June 26 as part of the World's Largest Swimming Lesson, a global initiative that will provide water safety training at 600 locations worldwide.

Starting at 9 a.m., families can gather at the local pool on 416 Kershaw St. NE. Children between 3 and 17 will learn vital skills to prevent drowning accidents.

"Pay attention to where your kids are, where they are in the pool, and especially what they're doing," said JP Hammond, aquatic coordinator at the Aiken YMCA, to WRDW.

Since 2010, this worldwide program has taught basic water safety. On one single day, pools and water centers across the globe will train thousands in essential swimming skills.

Hammond stressed a key rule — always ask before swimming. "The thing for the kids is always, always, always ask permission before you go in any pool. Whether that's asking mom, dad, grandma, aunt, uncle. Ask the lifeguards. You always, always ask permission and then never swim alone."

Smart choices in swimwear can boost safety. Bright suits, such as yellow, pink, or neon green, stand out in water. Proper safety gear, like Coast Guard-tested life jackets, adds vital protection.

Sign-ups stay open through June 20. Register online or visit Smith-Hazel Recreation Center, Lessie B. Price Aiken Senior and Youth Center, or Odell Weeks Activities Center to register in person.
