Last week, ground was broken on an $825 million upgrade to Interstate 95 at the South Carolina-Georgia border. The plan marks the biggest single contract South Carolina's road builders have ever taken on.
Workers will add a third lane in both directions along a 10-mile stretch from U.S. Highway 278 to the Savannah River. The job kicks off in late August 2025, with plans to finish by 2030.
"Construction is going to start at the end of August, so seeing earthwork happening. A lot of focus is going to be on the new bridge across the Savannah River," said SCDOT Secretary Justin Powell, per WTOC.
South Carolina will pay $728 million, with Georgia adding $116 million. The work aims to cut traffic jams on this vital path from Maine to Miami.
"Our economies are growing, we're growing in very smart ways, we're being very careful, and we hope that's going to produce more and more surpluses so we can keep doing this all over the state because this is key to our future," said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to WTOC.
