State officials have started the next step in creating a train route linking Atlanta to Savannah. They'll pick the final path in 2026.

Five routes sit on the drawing board. Some cut through Macon, while others wind past Athens or Augusta. Officials want this rail line to stitch together major cities and spark growth.

"It's going to take local grassroots support to make the final determination that's so important on whether we are or are not a selected corridor for this route between Atlanta and Savannah," former Macon Mayor Robert Reichert told WGXA.

Money talks have started with the I-75 Corridor Committee. They're looking at cash from city, state, and national sources. A mix of Macon-Bibb staff and Sen. Ossoff's team met recently, while state planners joined through screens.

This line could zip folks straight from Atlanta's main airport to mid-state spots. "It can literally bring the world to middle Georgia. If you get off the plane at Hartsfield-Jackson and onto the train and down to Macon ...  AH! Hotdog! We are cooking then!" Reichert said to WGXA.

The state wants to know what you think. They've put up a web poll to gather thoughts on the plans. Your input might sway which path they pick.

This train track fits into a wider web of plans. Teams are sketching out routes from Atlanta to Memphis and Charlotte, too. But those timelines are still being developed.
