A local walk next month aims to spread the word about free aid for cancer patients. The Step Up Against Cancer walk takes place on Sept. 13 at 8 a.m. at Doctors Hospital of Augusta.

Since early 2025, the program has provided shelter to more than 2,100 patients. They've also given nearly 3,000 rides to those who must visit Augusta for specialized care. These numbers keep growing each month.

"What I really like the most about the walk is leading up to it. More people are hearing about it; therefore, more people are hearing about cancer support services, and so many out there need us," said Michele Canchola, executive director of Cancer Support Services, to WRDW.

For two decades, this group has worked quietly in Augusta. Yet many still don't know they can get free lodging, transportation, and financial aid during treatment.

Billy and Belinda Mullis stay in program houses when they travel from Albany, Georgia, while Billy fights BPDCN — a rare type of blood cancer. "The leukemia was diagnosed as a BPDCN leukemia, which is a very rare leukemia. There's not very much treatment out there," the couple said to WRDW.

The support extends well past basic needs. Belinda explains that Cancer Support Services' staff and volunteers provide great friends and support to patients.
