Augusta GreenJackets’ John Gil Takes Home Carolina League Player of the Month
GreenJackets’ shortstop, John Gil, shows his major league potential by winning Carolina League Player of the Month.

Take them out to the ballgame. An evening at SRP Park is only one of many options when confronting those who criticize the Augusta area for having nothing to do.
Augusta TodayJohn Gil, an Atlanta Braves No. 14 prospect, won top player honors in the Carolina League this August. At just 19, the Single-A Augusta shortstop put up impressive numbers in minor league baseball.
In 22 games, Gil smashed his way to a .344 average. He crushed four home runs, ripped nine doubles, and drove in 24 runs. His power surge led to a .578 slugging percentage and an eye-catching 1.016 OPS, both tops in the league.
Before August, Gil had never hit more than four homers in a full season. Now he matched that total in just one month. His slugging shot way up too — from under .400 to .578.
He's stolen 49 bases this year, flying past his 2024 total of 40 steals split between two teams, and he has a .352 on-base rate this season. His August was even better — he reached base .438.
According to Sports Illustrated, Atlanta signed the Dominican talent for $110,000 in 2023. While other international players got bigger bonuses, Gil's steady rise has proven his worth.
For now, Gil keeps sharpening his skills in Augusta. Though his bat's on fire, the Braves stick to their plan. They'll take it slow with their rising star, who might enter the major leagues around 2028.
