A coffee shop with a kids' play area will start serving customers in Martinez, Georgia, this winter. At 4020 Washington Road, Playdates combines a watched play space, alongside coffee, tea, and snacks.

Kelly Sweeting, an ICU nurse raising two kids, spotted a gap in local spots where both parents and children could thrive. "There's got to be an in-between place where kids actually enjoy to go, but just as much that the parents enjoy to go," said Sweeting, to The Augusta Press.

Fresh beans from Peach Coffee Roastery in Atlanta will fill cups at the counter. Guests can also pick from teas, morning sandwiches, fresh-baked treats, and warm cinnamon rolls.

Smart design puts the coffee bar where adults can watch their kids play while sipping drinks or catching up on work. Parents won't need to choose between keeping an eye on their children and taking a break.

Sweeting's own struggles from taking her children to indoor play areas sparked the concept. According to The Augusta Press, Sweeting spent 12 months considering the idea. She got tips from Shelby Dodd, who runs Village Kin, a play space that opened in North Augusta in 2025.

Word has spread fast and parents already want to book birthday celebrations at Playdates. Construction moves forward at the site, with plans to open by November or December.
