The South Carolina Department of Transportation will complete a new bridge on Old Vaucluse Road by late May. Last June, the old structure came down after a car slammed into a gasoline tanker, which exploded beneath the span.

Crews have pushed ahead with construction in recent weeks. This new span will be wider than the previous one. Plans include adding protections that weren't part of the original design.

Federal dollars are covering reconstruction costs. SCDOT secured these funds after the June incident wiped out the crossing. Flames ate through steel and concrete until the structure gave way.

Old Vaucluse Road provided a key link over I-20 in Aiken County. Since June, drivers have taken alternate routes because the crossing vanished.
