Aiken County Schools Eliminate Chorus Programs at Three Middle Schools
Aiken County Schools will cut chorus classes at Paul Knox, Kennedy, and North Augusta middle schools when the 2026-2027 school year begins.

Aiken County Schools will cut chorus classes at Paul Knox, Kennedy, and North Augusta middle schools when the 2026-2027 school year begins. District officials say students aren't signing up for these classes when other options exist.
Colen Lindell represents the district on the school board. Parents started contacting him after word spread online.
"I've been getting a lot of emails and social media comments and messages from concerned parents about the chorus program at North Augusta Middle School and Paul Knox Middle School," Lindell said, per WRDW.
Registration numbers tell the story. Both schools show declining sign-ups. Various factors contribute to shrinking attendance at these locations.
Carolyn Hodges attends one of the affected schools. She felt crushed by what she heard. "Chorus is one of the biggest things I look forward to in school," Carolyn Hodges said.
Her mother, Melissa Hodges, worries about students who can't pay for private lessons. Public schools might be their only chance. "I'm grateful that we have the ability to do some additional enrichment outside of school, but not everyone has that opportunity. And for the kids that don't have it, it's in a public school. That's the whole point," Melissa Hodges said.
The district sets aside more than $338,000 each year for fine arts materials and equipment. Principals can spend these dollars however they choose, provided the money supports artistic instruction and helps kids learn.
A summer program called Gateway already includes singing instruction. District leaders are now considering after-school choirs, opportunities that bring singers from multiple campuses together, and expanded break-week classes.
