Work kicked off Monday on Jones Alley, the first piece of Augusta Tomorrow's 2035 Vision plan. Crews will transform the narrow passage into a walking plaza that offers a different path than Broad Street.

This affects visitors, shops, and people who live nearby. Augusta Tomorrow rolled out its 2035 Vision plan back in February. It's a  blueprint officials believe will reshape downtown for years to come.

Four ideas anchor the plan. A "5-Minute Downtown" will put stores, services, and what you need each day close enough to walk. The "Rippled Edge" will stretch the riverfront and give more ways to reach the water. The "Green Ribbon" will connect Augusta and North Augusta through trails and parks. A "Canopy Network" will plant trees for shade.

Jones Alley will make room for temporary shops, painted walls, and public gatherings. String lights will hang overhead. Murals and sculptures will line the walkway.

Planners wanted downtown to have smaller, hidden spots worth finding. This alley might become a creative center where shopping, food, art, and activities mix.

The district stays open and visible, but these tucked-away places will feel different. The plaza gives people another way to move through town.

February's announcement started a timeline stretching across ten years. Jones Alley is step one.
