The Family YMCA of Greater Augusta will offer free meals to kids when school lets out. This helps young people who count on cafeteria food during the school year.

Last summer, more than 350,000 meals went out through Cheryl's Kitchen. Kids under 18 got food at one of 46 spots across the area.

"We identified this need in our own programs and through our camps and after-school program of kids coming hungry. We were able to put a solution in place to feed them, and what we identified is there is a bigger need when kids are out of school," said Catie McCauley, CEO of the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta, per WRDW.

McCauley sees the need growing each year. "We are seeing a need as we identified this summer. We will be going out to more places, and we are preparing for more food deliveries throughout the summer," she said.

The Y on the Fly program brings food straight to families. Some don't have cars or buses nearby, so the service goes to apartment buildings and housing authorities.

Families can find food locations and Y on the Fly van schedules on the website under the food program tab. The group welcomes donations and volunteers who want to pitch in.
