Augusta Tech President Dr. James Whirl Names Sole Finalist for Savannah State University post
Dr. Jermaine Whirl, president at Augusta Technical College, has been named the sole finalist as president at Savannah State University by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
Whirl has serves as Augusta Tech’s president since 2020. During his tenure, enrollment at the institution rose more than 20 percent, the school entered into a historic partnership with the Augusta Municipal Golf Course and Augusta National Golf Club, and established six new academic programs at the school. Last year, Whirl was awarded both Georgia Southern University’s 2024 George and Lucy Armstrong Alumni Award and the Great Augusta Black Chamber of Commerce Leadership Award. Georgia Trend magazine also named Whirl one of its 40 Under 40 for 2024.
“I am deeply honored to be named a finalist for the presidency of Savannah State University,” Whirl said in a press release issued by the University System of Georgia. “Savannah State has a rich history of producing world class artists, educators, scientists, military leaders, corporate executives, and public policy advocates. I look forward to working with the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the greater Savannah community to continue the legacy of the state’s first public HBCU.”
The Board of Regents will take official action at a future meeting, which cannot be held any sooner than five days after the naming of a finalist.
