Greenville, South Carolina brings nature and urban living together
Blue Highways by Tee Gentry
It is one of the best cities in South Carolina. Some might argue it’s one of the best cities in America. While the city saw a real economic downturn in the 1970s, today (just a few years short of the 200th anniversary of its incorporation) Greenville, South Carolina seems to have its best days ahead.
At the center, both geographically and symbolically, Greenville’s central business district. It has transformed from an undesirable downtown 40 years ago to a South Carolina showpiece today. The downtown area is loaded with unique restaurants, shops, and entertainment.
The area is very walkable and feels safe. On an average night, you will see locals and visitors having dinner at sidewalk cafes, enjoying a walk, or checking out the vibrant music scene.
What I saw
Falls Park on the Reedy is something of an urban oasis. Sitting on the site of a former textile mill, the park, its falls, and a unique pedestrian suspension bridge have become Greenville landmarks and popular photo spots. It is no coincidence the Grand Bohemian Lodge, overlooking the park, chose this scenic location.
Other attractions include a minor league ballpark, the state-of-the-art Peace Center performing arts center, and the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, home to a hockey team and a popular stop for national touring acts.
Downtown Greenville is also host to many annual events, including Fall for Greenville in October. It features more than 300 restaurants and allows patrons to sample food, live music, and beer on tap.
Music is not limited to festivals. Most weekends musicians will be set up on Main Street, with their instrument of choice, singing songs and taking requests. Do not forget to throw some cash in their case.
Where to eat
After a night of visiting some cool area bars, the perfect morning stop is the Maple Street Biscuit Company. Try the Five and Dime biscuit with your choice of fried chicken or country fried steak topped with bacon, cheddar, egg, and sausage gravy. Yep, all of that on one God Bless America, pass the sweet tea, big ole Southern biscuit. Amen.
What I missed
I’ve yet to see a performance at the Peace Center. This facility is one of the best in the country and would be the perfect place to see a favorite artist or Broadway play. Also, a Greenville Drive game at the downtown ballpark would be nice. The Drive is an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. A hot dog and some baseball under the lights downtown just sounds like a great time.
